I enjoyed The Playground of Europe! I'll have to read more of his Mont Blanc essay--I'm planning a Mont Blanc post myself. I was also just thinking about how a To The Lighthouse reread might be in order now that I have Leslie Stephen's own portrayal of himself to compare! Maybe I'll join the readalong...
The Mont Blanc outing is one of the later chapters in Playground. Also relevant might be Shelley's great poem on Mont Blanc - depending how literary you want to be! So did you just climb M Blanc then?
Ah! I wonder if my edition doesn't have it? Mine is a photocopy of a first edition that ends with "the regrets of mountaineering" and "the dangers of mountaineering" but nothing dedicated to Mont Blanc. Do you know anything about different editions?
Yes, first edition was published two years before the sunset on Mont Blanc! Still, your first edition will have that great engraving of the Zinalrothorn. You can pick up later edition text on project Gutenberg. Or if you want to email via my website I’ll send a transcript of the Mont Blanc chapter.
Yes it does have the engraving, I love it! I just wish I had the actual book in hand…I will look for the later edition and get in touch if I don’t find it—thanks a bunch!
And, I indeed read Shelley's poem while I was there, so it would be fun to incorporate it! But no, I most certainly did not climb Mont Blanc, I went up the cable car to the Aiguille du Midi, 100% the kind of tourist that Stephen would despise haha
